Black Cat Bar

Purr your way through the arvo in this happenin' little retro wonderland. After dark, wrap your paws around a glass of red and tune your whiskers into the DJ. Meow!

Slinky students and prowling arty types are typically seen mooching around The Black Cat in Fitzroy. Formerly a cabaret lounge, this hip bar now features DJs every night, playing drum and bass, hip hop, break beats, dub, funk and soul. Tucked away on an inconspicuous corner along Brunswick Street, The Black Cat's glass frontage allows curious passers-by to peer into its retro wonderland of stripy couches and laminex table tops.

During the day, it's an intimate little bar and a great place to take a breather from browsing the nearby second-hand clothing stores and CD shops. It also sports a small, leafy outdoor seating area that's sheltered and dripping with green foliage. It's an idyllic spot for some lazy afternoon drinking. The only beer on tap is Cascade Pale Ale but never fear - there's a wide variety of bottled beers available, as well as plenty of wines and mixed spirits. Mondays and Tuesdays are the regular cheapy nights, offering $4 stubbies for those on a loose-change budget. Wednesdays offer up the full range of Monteiths beers from New Zealand, priced at $4.50 a pop.
