Beer is king at this new bar in North Carlton, providing a nirvana for beer lovers with a thirst for something new and unusual.
First timers at Bar Fred often wander into this long and skinny bar and stand agape as they take in the vast array of beer on offer at this fine newcomer. With legions of matching glassware to partner a particular beer style, its best to ask the experts what to try.
The folks at Bar Fred are serious about their love of beer, with more than 150 different brews on offer. New brews come and go as they are always on the look out for something different. Bar Fred encourages an adventurous palate and promote their $5 tasters as a toe-dip into a new world of beer. This clever sampler changes weekly, so make sure you drop in regularly to see what's new.
The selection of beer is sourced from all over, from French Canada to Belgium and New Zealand to Germany, with plenty of homegrown craft and micro brews. Try the Emersons Old 95, a cracking ale from New Zealand with rich malt and hoppy flavours.
Exposed brick walls, retro furniture and some lovely nooks and crannies make Bar Fred a very pleasant place to settle in for an ale, or two, or three. In the future, they will be hosting beer tastings to help educate and illuminate, but for now you can just get along and learn the easy way. Buy a beer.

So much potential!
I've been going to Bar Fred for a few years now and the above description is spot on when it raves about the beer selection - it's awesome! It's also incredibly well priced. There are plenty of places around Melbourne for a good beer selection, but I can almost guarantee it won't be priced as well/cheaply as Bar Fred.
I also love the $5 pizzas. And I'm not talking about rubbishy, cheap pizza. The pizza is fantastic! However, the cheap, awesome pizza and amazing beer selection draws a crowd and it's often impossible to get a seat. They don't take bookings and they reserve about one third of the seating space (couches and coffee tables at the back) for large groups on the hope that one will spontaneously show up, because as I said, they don't take bookings. It means that smaller groups end up standing around waiting/hoping that they can queue jump onto a table. I understand they want to keep the atmosphere relaxed, but they're too popular for that now and regulars are beginning to get sick of it.
So my advice is to show up early and make straight for the tables. You can worry about getting a beer later.
