Slip into this dimly lit wine bar and restaurant for upmarket drinkies and tapas nibbles. Don't forget your reading glasses, as the huge Italian-based wine list is an epic read.
While this slick city venue is primarily known as a gourmand's hang-out, the small bar attached to the restaurant has its own fan club of committed wine obsessives. Behind the grand historic facade, Balthazar is a sexy space of leather banquettes, candlelight and enough wine bottles to make budding oenophiles weak at the knees. The bar is lined with racks groaning with the weight of wine, while a wine tower is similarly laden with a wealth of vino.
Sidle up to the bar and hover over the wine list - a hefty tome of Italian-focused options, laid out by region. This labour of love may be best appreciated by fellow wine experts who can linger at length over the options, murmuring in agreement at the choices or arguing belligerently over the relative merits of gewurztraminer and riesling. Thankfully, for those of us who'd rather drink Chateau Cardboard than argue about vintages, help is at hand in the form of a whole crew of knowledgeable staff. While this is a convenient destination for after work drinkies, longer sessions can be sustained by a list of tapas nibbles such as pork or rabbit rillettes; or oysters with mango dressing.
